Preschool Learning Toys

Preschool learning toys are backed by a learn-by-doing philosophy. At this age children will still love manipulative toys. They are ready for all kinds of toys that spark the imagination. Preschoolers also love musical toys and will play longer and learn longer with a toy that incorporates music as a feature.

Preschool learning toys that are called manipulative toys are the kind of toys that can be pushed, pulled, tugged or manipulated with the hands in many ways. Manipulative toys for the preschooler can have smaller pieces than a younger child's. Most of the concern about pieces small enough to swallow is for the child under the age of three.

The toy category that requires imagination to play is things like puppets, dolls, play food, animals and cars. Many of these toys are miniature versions of some adult place or thing like a house, barn, garage, school bus, airport and much more. Play sets will include a place station with many of the things that go with the place: animals, people, play food, or vehicles. These toys enable preschoolers to imagine being all grown up.

Many preschool learning toys will have a great deal to do with emerging academic skills like reading and math. On the preschool level this means letter recognition and counting to begin with. Children should know their basic shapes and colors before starting kindergarten. Most children are eager enough to learn that they will know their alphabet and many of their counting numbers by than also. Many of the educational toys that teach these concepts use bright colors and delightful music and noises to capture the child's attention. Learning is so much fun that a child will not even realize he is learning. He is having fun playing.

Some preschool learning toys are also excellent for motor skills. They can strengthen hand-eye coordination. Small muscle motor skills are great precursors to learning write. Also the exercise of large muscles is a very healthy practice that is good for the brain also and should not be neglected.
